The workshop on energy data skills
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Uganda's energy data capabilities, two workshops were organised by the NDC Support Centre*: a first workshop in September 2022, and a second one in March 2023. The latter had the main objective of teaching practical skills in estimation, data collection and verification using actual data from Uganda. This practical application focused on developing resource and energy balances, responding to the various requests from the first workshop.
This second workshop included not only sessions on energy balancing, but also in-depth, engaging discussions on improving energy data in Uganda. Participants now had the opportunity to learn more about energy efficiency and gain knowledge on calculating CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion.
The workshop combined training presentations with hands-on exercises covering a variety of aspects. These included the basics of energy data, practical applications using Ugandan energy data, toolkits for energy statistics, and exploring energy data beyond balance sheets.
A diverse and inspiring audience
The training was attended by a as many as twenty representatives from many different government agencies. Participants attended from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the Ministry of Water and Environment, the Ministry of Works and Transport, the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) and the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL), among others! Evaluation forms were used to collect feedback with no less than eighteen participants sharing their insights and suggestions.
The NDC Support Centre’s commitment to Uganda
The training session took place as part of the NDC Support Centre’s trajectory for Phase 2: Energy Data and Statistics. In this context, the aim of the workshop was to develop robust energy statistics as a basis for planning, monitoring, and policy development for future NDCs and other energy-related needs.
By providing participants with practical skills and knowledge in energy data management, the training workshop underpins the NDC Support Centre's efforts to increase Uganda's capacity in energy planning, monitoring, and policy development. This technical training contributes to the country's broader objective of promoting sustainable energy practices and effectively addressing climate change challenges.
*The NDC Support Centre was established with the financial support from the Government of Flanders – Departement Omgeving (Belgium) through the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO). The NDC Support Center also benefits from technical support from CO2Logic, a carbon and environmental consultancy company, which is part of the implementing consortium together with AFREC and VITO.
